Traditional vs Cosmetic Tattoo
There are three important things to take into consideration when deciding between a regular tattoo and a cosmetic one, and these are:
1. The method
2. The ink or pigment to be used
3. How long the tattoo will last.
The method
A regular tattoo is applied with needles that pierce the skin while creating a vacuum that pulls the pigment into it. When it comes to a cosmetic tattoo, a rotary mechanism turns and slices the skin to apply the pigment. It should be pointed out here that the cosmetic rotary mechanism is a gentler one, and the needles used are finer.
The ink or pigment to be used
In Australia if you import or manufacture a cosmetic tattoo pigment for client services, resale or other business-related activities, you are known as an ‘introducer of industrial chemicals’ and must be legally registered with the National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS).
“Tattoo inks may be made from titanium dioxide, lead, chromium, nickel, iron oxides, ash, carbon black, and other ingredients. Some of the pigments are industrial grade and used as automobile paint.”
The pigments in cosmetic tattoos are more regulated than regular tattoo inks and iron oxide is used, which is deemed to be the safest pigment available. Regular tattoo inks use various chemicals to make them longer lasting, but which may have a more watery consistency than the cosmetic tattoo.
How long the tattoo will last
Cosmetic tattoos only last between one and three years, with touch-ups in-between often recommended. While regular tattoos do remain intact for considerably longer, the shorter duration means that over time, as your skin’s elasticity changes, what looked good in 2020 may not be as balanced in 2030… So a touch-up may be a good thing to correct the look and to give you a fresher appearance.
