Everyone who has suffered from acne knows how devastating it is. And although you realise what ridiculous advice well-meaning friends and acquaintances, and sometimes complete strangers, are giving you — everyone becomes a skin care specialist as soon as they look at you — you try absolutely everything they suggest just because it has apparently worked for someone else — and you are desperate. So you spend a fortune you don’t have on creams and peels and diets, hoping and praying for the best. There are no miracle cures.

“Acne doesn’t make you ugly. Everybody gets spots. Who cares?”

When 22-year-old Kendall Jenner was criticised for going to the 2018 Golden Globe Awards suffering from acne, she sent an inspiring message to her followers, saying “never let that shit stop you!” The stigma of acne seems to be reduced at last, thanks to sufferers who are on social media.

“I wasn’t a monster, I wasn’t mad, and it was perfectly normal to feel wretched at the sight of yet another horrific rash.”

Young people talk of being robbed of years of their life as they are convinced that everyone is staring at their acne. They talk of giving up and isolating themselves and being completely drained. But everyone who has gone through acne says that it will eventually go away and that underneath it you are the same person you always were.

Overcome the compulsion to pick. The most important piece of advice for every type of acne is not to pick.

It is essential to focus on the things you like about yourself, things that boost your confidence, and not to suffer in silence. Meditation helps some people, writing down their feelings helps others. Constant cleaning and vigorous scrubbing can do more harm than good. Exfoliation and gentle scrubs are better. If you feel self-conscious, embarrassed, ashamed, and angry, that’s normal. There is no point in pretending you don’t care. Go to a good dermatologist and do exactly what they say. However frustrated you may be, try to remain positive and patient.
